Light, Warmth, and Tenderness

Surrounded by wind and light

We sing praises to the heavenly sea

The Gaillardia, an unyielding light

The Basalt, an unbreakable presence

Their spirits surge through us in gratitude and bliss

The breeze wakes the ocean

Forever lifting the crests of waves

Forever drifting the clouds above

Inviting you to step into the water in a dance

A dance we all know

As the Basalt sets the tempo

There is no song without flowers

No rhythm without rocks

Let the heart love freely and our dreams soar

The flight never lonely even when left alone

The waves never forgotten

Our light, our warmth

Is a secret garden

Is the Yellowstone

Forever bright

Forever affectionate

Forever embracing

This tenderness

Our only truth

Artist’s Biography

Cheng (Free Bird) Mei-Chu has painted professionally for more than a decade. Most of her art is inspired by her hometown, the Penghu Archipelagos off the western coast of Taiwan. The simple pastoral way of life and majestic sceneries of these islands are the subject matter in many of her works.

Although the rural setting of Penghu offers many beautiful muses, it lacks the cosmopolitan qualities which nurture the study and advancement of art. Mei-Chu depends mostly on her own discipline and imagination to teach herself the painting techniques of the west from the few textbooks she could get her hands on. She was also fortunate enough to travel to Europe which resulted in volumes of sketches that depicted a world completely outside of her own. These unique circumstances make her paintings one of a kind.

From 1991 to 1995 Mei-Chu’s main focus was on watercolors. She started painting with oils in 1996 and currently works with a combination of brushes and blades. Afflicted with a genetic disorder, Mei-Chu is forced to hold her brushes and blades in a manner different from other artist thus altering her approach to the canvas. This however has become a part of her individual style.

One can also observe circular and spiral lines in the paintings of Cheng Mei-Chu. These patterns represent the movements of the wind, the sea, and also the movements and relationships between human beings and nature. It is the intention of the artist for the viewer to imagine and look beyond the obvious subjects of the paintings and think of the scene as a living entity.
